What would cause holes in my yard?

It is dime size holes around our backyard. The grass is dead in about a radius of 3 inches around the hole. We live in central Ohio, and it is not our year for cicadias 17. The holes are too small to moles or waffles and there is no raised floor or other damage around the hole. It is not like a squirrel would dig, either. Could it be insects or larvae or spiders somehow? I've never seen anything in or out of the hole. I am baffled.

Could ber grasshoppers or cicadias; We are Mo and it * is not our year for them either, but we did anyway. Grubs also drill holes. Can you dig a shovel and see what you might find? If it is the larvae or snails, I heard if you put beer in their output and drink at night and die. No kidding.
